#102 was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in June 1924 for the Sumter & Choctaw Railroad Company. After it retired from service in 1962, the locomotive was sold to the National Railroad Museum in Wisconsin. In the 1980s, it was fitted with a couple of diesel engines on it's tender in order for it to pull trains.

You know, it would be nice if they actually restored this thing to run under it's own power.

I know. It sucks that NRM was too lazy to actually restore it to operation. Grump

Indeed. I'm kinda disappointed that they did that. I don't understand why they couldn't just restore it the way it was before to operation.

I wonder if it had something to do with the internal workings, and that it would cost too much to restore it; the cheaper alternative for the museum to operate a steam engine would be to power it by diesel.

Very true, but it's kind of fooling the public. They may think they're actually seeing a steam locomotive being fired up and moving, without realizing the true case.

Yeah, it does seem like a cheat. I wonder if any of the other engines there could've be restored to operation... Also, is the 102 operated on occasions or is she display now?

I'm not quite sure actually. But she wasn't operating when I was there, I've heard that she still operates occasionally, though.
